"Why do I need to learn hand to hand? I mean anyone gets close enough for me to get my hands on and it's lights out," she said straightening her gloves for the seventh time.

"Logan said you were feeling uncomfortable with this training. I doubt it has anything to do with over confidence and everything to do with the fear you'll hurt your sparring partner," Scott said hands on his hips and comforting look on his face. Part teacher, part friend, all good looking in his gray tanktop and sweats combo.

"For a guy that doesn't talk much he sure spills the beans a lot," Rogue said pulling at her sleeves to make sure they were still over her arms. She glanced up at Scott and sighed. She didn't want to hurt anyone, especially not him.

She heard feet pounding on the mat and looked up to found Scott racing at her. They collided and fell down to the ground. In a panic she kicked at him and he took the hit like a pro. He pinned her down with his legs on either side of her hips and both of his hands pinning down her wrists.

"If you end up like this how do you get out of it?" Scott demanded.

Rogue wiggled trying to get out but couldn't. She strained suddenly panicked. She couldn't do anything, she was helpless and that was something she wasn't used to anymore. She couldn't touch him, couldn't attack back, couldn't do anything.

"I don't...I don't know," she said staring back at him fear in her eyes.

"That's why we practice. Hone your skills and reflexes. You aren't invincible. With the right tactics you're beatable just like the rest of us and I don't want to see that happen to you," he said getting up and offering her a helping hand. She took it and stood up feeling like a completely moron.

"I'm just scared. I don't wanna hurt anyone."

"I know. I'm scared too," he said putting a hand up to his goggles and smiling, "If these slip during a fight, even just an inch I could kill my friend. It's always in the corner of my mind and that's a good thing. It keeps me aware, keeps other's safe, but the fear doesn't control me. Don't let it take you over either."

"Alright," she said nodding her head, "I'll practice."

"That's my girl," he said with a genuine smile and before she could stop herself she tossed herself into his arms.

She hugged him and to her surprise he hugged her back. It was almost like freak contact. She felt the heat of his skin and the firmness of his muscles. He ran his hand through her hair than kissed the top of her head.

"Thank you," she said into his chest.

"No, thank you, Rogue," he said and she couldn't be sure what he meant.

This vignette rings true emotionally. The teacher-student vibe is balanced with fellow feeling, and there's a nice hint of something more there too.
